Boral Cultured Stone® Installation – Mortar Mixing and Tinting

Once the general layout is determined, you’re ready to mix the mortar. All Cultured Stone® products are installed with Type N mortar. To prepare the mortar, in a wheelbarrow or mortar tub, start by dry mixing an appropriate amount of each mortar ingredient, including any pigments. Tinting the mortar can greatly enhance the appearance of the finished installation; and it’s easily done using iron oxide pigments, available from your dealer.

After mixing the dry ingredients, add small amounts of water, and mix thoroughly. You’ll want it to be somewhat dry at first, so you can judge the consistency, and work your way into just the right mix. Add water as needed and check the results. The proper mix has a firm, moist look and feel that is easy to work with, and will adhere to the wall surface. One good test is that the mortar should cling to the trowel, when it is held vertically, and then release with a shake.

Mortar mixers can also be used; especially on larger projects. For additional information about mortar proportions, mixing, and tinting, refer to the written installation instructions.
